Who are we?
Couturier Sandra Murray is an artist at heart. Based in Inverness, the Highlands are a defining force in her work – the colours, textures, forms and outlines finding their way inextricably into her creations. Hard against soft, light against shadow, raw against refined, these are the qualities that define a Sandra Murray piece.
Studying at Glasgow School of Art in the 1970’s, the work of sixties pioneers like Zandra Rhodes and Jean Muir was just as much an influence as Michelangelo and Rembrandt. On leaving, Sandra set about refining her skills as a designer/couturier/artisan, taking private commissions and being driven by an innate passion for handstitching, combinations of beautiful colours and outstanding fabrics.
She is very much at home on the global stage. As well as providing consultancy work to some of the world’s leading names, her high-profile work includes international showcases in places as far afield as New York, Tokyo, London and Cannes.
Bespoke is a forté. From ballgowns to frock coats to entire weddings, Sandra sees bespoke as an intimate three-way relationship between herself, the client and the creations that emerge. At the same time she offers a concierge service, aimed particularly at people in the performing arts who require statement pieces to reflect another facet of their skill and virtuosity.
With an enduring love of the textiles of Scotland, particularly Harris Tweed, in 1999 Sandra was commissioned to dress the Queen for the opening of the Scottish Parliament. In 2008, she was awarded an MBE for services to Scottish fashion and textiles.
