    Apply for one of Fashion Foundry’s limited number of Go & See Travel Grants for Paris Trade Show 2017.

    Fashion Foundry is offering a limited amount of Go & See Travel Grants to fashion and fashion accessories brands based in Scotland who would like to visit a trade show before committing to exhibit in future seasons.

    The Grant of £150 can be used towards travel, accommodation, and entry badge to: Who’s Next and Premiere Classe, 20-23 January.

    The deadline to apply is 9am on Monday 19th December 2016.

    Criteria:

    • fashion and fashion accessories designers
    • based in Scotland
    • minimum of three stockists
    • available to travel between 20-23 January 2017

    Decision will be based on the above criteria and a statement on how this trip will impact on your brand.

    Successful applicants will be reimbursed post-show after providing all receipts for travel / entry badge up to a value of £150 (including VAT), plus a report with any supporting images that Fashion Foundry can share to the wider fashion community on their website.

    Instigated by the Deacon of The Weavers Trade in Dundee, an initiative has recently been started in Dundee and the surrounding area that requires wool yarn – any colour, any spool, any count.


    The Weavers Trade is sponsoring hand looms to go into care homes, and then a secondary school is paired with the care home. There is also one heddle loom that is being moved from school to school to be used in conjunction with their arts department.


    Sandra Thomson, schools co-ordinator of the Weavers Trade in Dundee, is helping to introduce the secondary school pupils to the care homes and has started a programme centred around weaving to give a purpose for both groups to spend time together.


    It has already been found that as a natural development through the connection established around the hand loom, that the schools along with the residents of the care homes are doing additional projects. In one care home there are now gardening projects; in another home pupils and residents are painting a garden shed. Already there have been two pupils, who on leaving school, took up employment in one of the care homes. The care home managers are very supportive of the benefit of having the young people come into their homes.


    Once the link runs effectively between the school and the care home, the ongoing management is handed over to the school and care home.  So far three care homes have been paired with a secondary school, and other connections are in progress.


    We are looking for any yarn ends and warp strippings that could be supplied free of charge. The yarn for the hand looms would ideally be a heavy wool- easy on the hands.


    J&D Wilkie will manage the collection and distribution of the wool. All contributors will be notified to the Weavers Trade and acknowledged. No person or company is making any money from this – it is entirely a social enterprise for the benefit of school children and the retired people in the care homes.

    Zero Waste Scotland are running a project to support 10 SMEs across key sectors in Scotland aimed at reducing waste produced by improving packaging.

    It is estimated that the total quantity of packaging placed on to the Scottish market is 944,000 tonnes, with 534,000 tonnes collected for recycling. This gives a Scottish recycling rate, for packaging material, of 57%.

    Zero Waste Scotland are offering 10 funded places on a programme enabling businesses to make see tangible environmental, financial and operational benefits from making efficiencies in packaging use and minimising packaging waste with independent, funded expert support. There are a limited few places still available.

    After a fortnight of social media vote canvassing, the winner of the Round Nine Wild Card EDGE Public vote was announced as new fashion kids on the block, Nu Blvck. Nu Blvck competed against Spey Cardio and educational toy company Spark and Rocket to win the opportunity to pitch for additional funding of up to £100,000 at the Scottish EDGE. Nu Blvck managed to score 44% of the 1,168 votes cast, a clear and deserved winner.

    An ethical brand, on a mission to change the way people shop, Nu Blvck works with emerging fashion designers and artisans to create beautiful, exclusively-designed accessory collections. Read more about the company and their values here.

    Nu Blvck will now be given the opportunity to pitch for additional funding at the Scottish EDGE Round Nine final on December 15th, 2016.

    NU BLVCK suddenly are everywhere, and are causing quite a stir. Think fashion-forward design, artisan craft, and luxury materials: these principles are at the heart of Scotland’s newest brand to hit the fashion scene.


    Flipping the conventional fashion model on it’s head, co-founders Becca and Andrew are disrupting the marketplace with their made-to-order approach, connecting designers and artisans like never before in order to create limited edition capsule collections.


    “We plan to launch six limited edition collections in the next year, each collection a collaboration with different designers and artisans – creating something truly unique. Creative collaboration is at the heart of everything we do.” – Becca Flory, co-founder.


    The daring duo’s debut collection, designed by emerging Edinburgh design whiz Ruth Williams, was met with great acclaim from customers worldwide; with pre-orders leading to the success of a crowdfunding campaign to support NU BLVCK in funding it’s new online platform.


    The most popular piece in the collection was a chunky lambs wool scarf, crafted by fellow STLA member Di Gilpin. This beautiful piece incorporates a soft leather loop, a contemporary twist on a classic staple.


    “The scarf typifies the NU BLVCK model,” Andrew Vincent explains. “We wanted to bring Ruth’s designs to life by collaborating with one of the best hand knitters in Scotland.”


    Alongside designing and making her own creations for her label, Di hand-knits all sorts; from 70s-style trousers to one-off cardigans for world-renowned fashion houses. Di’s high profile collaborations have included the likes of Kanye West and Nike.


    “As a premium brand, NU BLVCK strives to source the best local materials to ensure the highest quality – thankfully this is something Di could advise on, so we worked together to source the highest quality yarn.


    Provenance is a word used far too readily we think, but when you turn up at Di’s studio and find a sheep’s fleece on her worktop then you really understand the meaning of the word.” says Becca.


    Building on the buzz from their August launch, NU BLVCK have recently launched a second collection. Collaborating with another up and coming Scottish designer, Hannah Louise Baxter, the Icon Revived collection campaign shots were released this week. The 100% silk pieces in the collection are printed and hand-rolled in Edinburgh within a mile of each other, through collaborations with BeFab Be Creative and Kalopsia Collective.

    The current funding package for skills development support for the textiles sector (delivered by the Scottish Textiles Skills Partnership) comes to an end in July 2017. Working with its partners and the funding bodies, the STLA is contributing to the development of a new Skills Action Plan for 2017-20. As part of this process, it is critical that we gather the views of the industry to inform and shape this new Plan.

    With increasing competition for an ever decreasing funding resource, we need to make sure that the textile sector has a strong voice and that we can provide robust evidence of industry need. We are therefore asking for your support to ensure that the new Skills Action Plan accurately reflects the needs of the sector.

    We have scheduled a programme of Regional Industry meetings as an opportunity to share some of the achievements from the current project but more importantly to discuss the key skills challenges which should be included in the new Plan.

    These meetings will take place as follows:

    Glasgow – 10.30am, 23 November, Glasgow Clyde College (Cardonald Campus)

    Inverness – 11am, 29 November, Highlands & Islands Enterprise office

    Hawick – 11am, 2 December, Borders Textile Towerhouse

    We will also shortly be issuing an Employer Skills Survey. This comprehensive review of the skill needs of the fashion, textile and leather industry in Scotland will gather robust evidence which will:

    - build a profile of the current and future workforce

    - reflect sectoral changes since the last industry survey was undertaken in 2013

    - identify the key skill challenges facing the sector now and over the next 3-5 years

    The information you provide is critical to helping us shape the development of the new Skills Action Plan for the textiles and leather industry in Scotland which will place the skill needs of industry at its very core.

    The Skills Action Plan will then be put forward to the relevant Scottish Government agencies to secure the funding necessary to deliver the skills and workforce development interventions we as an industry need to create a world class workforce.
