Nominations for the 2018 Scottish Export Awards, sponsored by HSBC in association with Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, are now open.
The Scottish Export Awards and International Trade Campaign brings together businesses from across Scotland to recognise and celebrate their entrepreneurial exporting achievements.
Nominations are now open, for businesses of all shapes and sizes, both exporters and export advisers, so don’t miss your chance to get involved.
The awards on offer range from micro exporter of the year all the way through to large exporter, e-commerce exporter, scale-up and entrepreneurial exporter of the year.
The event will be held on 22 March 2018 at the Hilton Hotel Glasgow. The awards have proven extremely popular in previous years, are completely free to enter, and are a unique opportunity to build your brand profile, generate some good publicity and attract potential investors.
Last year’s BQ Scottish Exporter of the Year award went to the large exporter prize winner, John McGavigan, the Glasgow plastics manufacturer which exports car components across the globe.

Scotland Re:Designed (SR:D) returns celebrating luxury and Scottish making at SR:D’s annual showroom, runway, awards and weekend market with a Makers theme this year.
SR:D Glasgow takes place at multi-cultural arts venue, SWG3 in Finnieston from Wednesday the 8th to Sunday the 12th of November with a three-day showroom and a weekend pop-up store for consumers & public where brands are encouraged to submit ideas for creative stand displays.
There are three Creative Scotland funded application stands available in the following categories: Menswear, Womenswear, and Accessories & Interiors - a total of 12 funded spaces. As part of the prize, winners will be offered a 1-2-1 mentoring session with an expert panel and a slot on the much anticipated SR:D runway.

Scottish Interiors: LDN was held on the 18th and 19th of September at Scotland House in London. The best of Scottish interior and textile design companies showcased their products to international buyers, architects, and the media. Who are you, what do you do, and what do you make?
The Natasha Marshall studio is seen as one of the leading textile design studios in the UK, creating contemporary graphic designs for fabrics and wallpaper. Our residential stocked studio collections showcase the best of British design and manufacturing. Or, if you have a specific project, our bespoke service is unique due to our worldwide mill and manufacturing knowledge. We have been producing flame retardant fabrics and wallcoverings for the worldwide hotel, cruise, leisure and healthcare markets since 1997.
What do you hope to achieve at Scottish Interiors LDN?
To grow our brand awareness in the UK and International markets. A showcase for our stocked fabric and wallpaper collections or bespoke design services to potential new clients, stockists, agents, distributors, representatives and influencers.
Feedback to our first showing of our ‘Fife Yacht’ collection of fabrics and wallpapers that will officially launch in January 2018.
Who are the dream stockists for the Natasha Marshall brand?
Clients who love simple design classics. Leading independent interior retailers who stock our pattern books and promote the Natasha Marshall ranges. Our style is very simple and graphic as our fabrics and wallpapers are designed to enhance the architectural space.
What tools and resources or mentors did you use to create your International Strategy?
We work on our International Strategy in-house, with Scottish Enterprise & Business Gateway through courses and focused help. To date we have grown International sales by exhibiting at trade shows and through social media.
What do you think the most important part in the creation of an International Strategy?
We are looking to grow key markets where they love our simple graphic design handwriting. We feel it is vital to understand each market you are selling into or targeting. Service is key in our sector, so we believe it is vital to have the funds to be able to fully service each new market with stocks and samples.
What are three milestones in your business trajectory that have gotten you to this point?
1. The excellent quality and service we offer to all our stockists and bespoke service clients. Customers all say how they love working with the team at Natasha Marshall due to our friendliness, knowledge, and quality of service that we give.
2. Our manufacturing knowledge from working with mills and manufacturers all around the world for the past 20 years. Our ability to add pattern onto fabrics, wall coverings, carpets, rugs, cushions, bedding, ready made curtains etc. right through to delivery.
3. Designing and building our architectural award winning, quirky design studio in Glasgow’s West End.
What is the Unique Selling Point of Natasha Marshall that you will use to sell the brand to buyers?
Our distinct design handwriting established since 1997 - ‘Simple iconic graphic patterns that are timeless and enhance the architectural interior space’.
From experience, our understanding of how to deal with export countries including the delivery and distribution processes.
Stocked ranges that we offer a full cut length and piece service on, through to our bespoke service for individual projects or ranges supplied with all the required technical specification information.
What are you going to do to prepare for Scottish Interiors LDN?
We are in the midst of inviting potential clients to the event. We are also researching influencers in each international market that we are keen to open; and have started to interact through social media. We are thoroughly researching each company we have meetings set up with, to ensure our pitch is focused on their market sector, as our full offering is very broad.

Who are you, what do you do, and what do you sell?
Since 1986, ERIBÉ have been passionately involved in all technical areas of knitwear with emphasis on design and manufacture. We also hand knit; working with our team of outworkers as well as machine-knitting on all gauges of knitting machines. Specialising in natural fibres and known for our blending of colours, textures, and innovative ideas, we have built up an interesting archive of knitted fabrics which are in constant use for developing ideas for customers and themselves. Our main collection under the brand name of ERIBÉ is inspired by British Heritage, but modernised for a sporty, healthy and busy lifestyle with a focus to make women look younger through finding their own colours. Our main markets are Europe and Asia.
We want to establish new working relationships with larger interior retailers who are keen to work with us to create their own knitted interiors, and interior designers who supply high-end hotels / houses / yachts.
With support from Scottish Enterprise and other organisations such as SCDI and the Borders Export Association, ERIBÉ have been on numerous training courses to help write our strategy. However, the best learning has come from working closely with our customers and agents to knit and develop what the market demands.
Listening to the market and trying to imagine what the future demand will be. Building a system that is flexible and used to constantly improve to look after customers and suppliers in a changing market place. Customer service.

What is the USP of Eribe Knitwear that you will pitch to buyers?
'The Art of Knitting': We knit your favourite jumper, blanket, hat, glove, or scarf; working with beautiful yarns to blend colours, textures and patterns following WGSN trends and listening to our customers.
We are designing a package of information to make it easy for customers to buy interior cushions, throws, and hot water bottle covers; additionally featuring knitted fabrics in a wide variety of yarns, patterns and knitting techniques for designers to work from. Also we are creating a presentation showing photos of our work, an introduction to ERIBÉ, how to work with us, and the prices and costs involved.

Harris Madras Fabric Collection by MYB Textiles
Buyers, architects, and influencers are invited to an exclusive view of the latest collections and meet Scotland’s world renowned interior companies personally over the 18th and 19th September 2017 at striking new venue, 58 Victoria Embankment, London EC4Y ODR.
Over the two days, 25 Scottish interiors and lifestyle designer makers, manufacturers and brands will showcase a variety of their latest stunning concepts including floor coverings, textiles, leather, outdoor, furniture, and wallpapers. Among those debuting new work are Araminta Campbell Ltd, Charlotte James Furniture & MYB Textiles.
Alongside the walk-through aesthetic, there will be an opportunity to meet one-on-one with the Scottish brands to discuss interior design specialist needs in one place this year, before they show at Decorex, London Design Festival, Design Junction and Focus across the city.
Exhibitors selected by national body Textiles Scotland include Bute Fabrics, Harris Tweed Hebrides, Laura Spring, and Anta; amongst many others which can be viewed here. The event will also feature a preview of Craft Scotland’s pavilion Scotland: Craft & Design (in partnership with Emergents) for the London Design Fair, and five emerging Scottish designers tipped as ‘Ones to Watch’ supported by Creative Scotland.

Creative Scotland’s Emerging Designer Display:
We are textiles artisans, Morton Young and Borland (MYB Textiles), weaving beautifully crafted lace and madras fabrics since 1900. Our Victorian mill in the Irvine Valley is the only mill in the world still designing and weaving Nottingham Lace. We produce stocked fabric collections as well as lace and madras window panels, roller blinds, wallpaper, table covers and baby blankets.
Our hope is to gain more exposure within the UK market, predominately with London/SE based architects, interior designers and wholesale customers.
We have a large cross section of worldwide stockists including TV/Film production companies, boutique interior stores, high end hospitality organisations and fashion companies who are all great. We would like to expand upon our UK stockists especially targeting high end retailers such as Osborne & Little and Liberty.
Our sales and design staff completed a SDI international strategy workshop hosted at Scottish Enterprise.

What is Unique Selling Point of MYB Textiles that you will to use to pitch your business to buyers?
We are the only producers designing lace & madras fabric, marrying traditional skills with modern technology. We offer wide width fabric options, quick turnaround times on bespoke design solutions, and we have a track record collaborating with world famous brands.
How will you prepare for Scottish Interiors LDN?
We are busy researching companies we have appointments with and those that are attending the event, and tailoring our presentation to fit with each company.

For the past 26 years, Decoupage has designed and manufactured luxury hand painted wallpapers for the UK based commercial interiors market. We hand paint to order, with an impressive delivery time of 2-4 weeks. Since our products are made to order, we can colour match to the client’s scheme. This approach has allowed us to undertake large projects, such as Philip Treacy’s signature G Hotel in Galway, to bespoke private residences in London and NYC. All Decoupage wallpapers are highly durable, fire rated in the UK to ‘BS 476 parts 6 & 7’ and are environmentally friendly.
Decoupage also has a luxury range of co-ordinating interior decorative fabrics including cushions, throws, curtains and lampshades and a digitally printed range of retail wallpapers which we will show at the Scottish Interiors: LDN event.
What do you hope to achieve at Scottish Interiors LDN?
We continuously strive to extend our brand’s reach and aim to further promote our unique products and services at Scottish Interiors LDN. We look forward to networking with international buyers there and finding collaboration opportunities for special interiors projects and retail/online outlets for our very latest DX2 range. We also hope to reconnect with contacts made previously at Hi Design Asia, Heimtextil and Maison & Objet.
Who are your dream stockists for your brand?
Designers/buyers with top commercial and residential projects such as Hirsch Bedner Associates, HLA, Jaya International, Ritz Carlton for our hand painted ranges.
Distributors such as Arte, Kravet or Marburg for our latest hybrid range, “Lounge Lizards”:
Retailers such as Wallpaper Direct, Not on the High Street or John Lewis for our new ‘DX2’ range.
Although Decoupage has had international sales indirectly through its UK distribution and promotion at international trade shows, we initiated our international strategy in 2015 when we were fortunate enough to participate in Hi Design Asia, supported by Scottish Enterprise. We like to take a personal approach and met several key buyers there who appreciated being able to speak directly to the business owner. We are finding that frequent visits best aid the establishment of new relationships. This not only provides opportunities to clearly communicate our USP’s but also to fully understand the needs of new partners. This year we have obtained global distribution within the Fardis brand of Muraspec PLC for three of our ranges.
I think it is paramount to listen and pay attention to details when developing an international strategy. Listening to advice from colleagues at trade shows, at networking events, and through participation with Textiles Scotland will give a useful insight into what to do and what not to do when creating and implementing an International strategy. Listening to potential buyers, to find out what they want and how you are best placed to help them realise their goals is crucial.
1) Distribution by Helen Sheane Wallcovering (now part of the Vescom group). Back in the 1990’s, we were distributed and stocked by Helen Sheane wallcoverings, who had the foresight to promote a small Scottish company which not only hand painted wallpaper, but then ripped or cut it up into pieces before pasting it onto the wall. Every major commercial interior design firm in the UK had a Decoupage box of samples, and our style and reputation really took off then. Years later, we have a long list of loyal clientele, and receiving orders from repeat customers when they move premises is always a pleasure.
2) Perfecting the digital/hand-painted wallpaper hybrid. Although we originally were a “no-tech” company, we were always interested in the latest technologies, and finding a way to incorporate 16,000+ colours which dry instantly is too good to miss. Five developmental years later, and the digital technology has finally caught up with our imagination. Realising all of our stringent requirements; environmentally friendly, made in Scotland and commercially reproducible, we are delighted to be able to offer a truly unique blend of artisanal and state of the art design.
3) Global distribution through Muraspec PLC . who have taken three of our ranges for global distribution this year, and look forward to international sales of “DecoTweed”, “Natralle” and Eden II”.
What is the USP of Decoupage that you will use to pitch your business to buyers?
Authenticity: Decoupage designs are cutting edge and hand painted in the Scottish Borders by artisans with 26 years of experience. We sign every project to assure authenticity.

Outstanding Service Commitment: Decoupage works closely with clients to ensure that every project has a successful outcome. We have 26 years of experience meeting deadline commitments, and provide expert guidance and support at every stage of the project.
We are very excited to be launching two new product ranges at the Scottish Interiors: LDN event. Decoupage will present our latest hybrid range, “Lounge Lizards”, and a completely new digitally printed retail wallpaper range, called "DX2".
We are in the final stages of preparing samples and promotional images for these new ranges, as well as price lists in all major currencies. We are also busy contacting potential international partners to invite them to Scottish Interiors: LDN, and aim to utilise the event to increase our social media presence.

Araminta Campbell is a weaving company specialising in luxury woven textiles. With a focus on design and provenance, we pair the best of Scottish craftmanship with a refined luxury aesthetic. We have two offerings available to the interiors trade; the MINTA collection of British alpaca cushions and throws, and our bespoke woven design service where we create unique and personal designs for each client and produce them here in Scotland.
Our focus is to continue expanding the reach of our brand in both the UK and international markets. With London’s status as a global city, this is a great opportunity for us to meet new clients for our bespoke design service as well as stockists, agents and distributors for the MINTA range. Being able to initially meet people face to face is great as it enables us to show the quality and variety of what we do and get a personal sense of what they are looking for.
We aim to continue working with speciality luxury brands and boutiques stocking the MINTA range, and hope to expand this to exclusive lines with brands such as Bamford with whom we are already in discussion.
With our bespoke design service, we have loved working with luxury hotel The Fife Arms and would be a dream to continue having designs we have created being used in such prestigious locations.
When planning our international strategy we have found advice and export courses provided by Scottish Enterprise and Business Gateway really helpful, and have benefited from the insight of their industry experts. We have built upon this ourselves by attending trade shows and planning market visits to learn more about the specific markets we are targeting in our international plan.
I would say that being targeted in your approach is vital, and knowing what it is your customers really value and look for in each individual market. This helps to streamline your efforts and make sure you are putting your products and services in front of the people that will appreciate them the most and be the most likely to become customers.
It is also important to have a handle on the logistical and financial implications of selling internationally – have systems in place before you begin taking orders!
1. Gaining recognition for our quality of design and service by winning large contracts such as the Fife Arms Hotel.
2. Being one of the Young Scottish Edge winners in 2017 – as well as being a great achievement, the award has helped fund the current redevelopment of our branding and new website.
3. Getting accepted onto Scottish Enterprises’ Growth pipeline has given us access to the support we needed to expand the brand internationally.
I think the personal service that we offer; working with each client on their project directly to create a design that means something to them, as well as our broad range of options for production - enabling them to get exactly what they want.
The Scottish production and provenance of our products, as well as the inspiration from the Scottish landscape I use in my designs.
The luxurious nature of our offerings, from the quality and exclusivity of a bespoke tweed to the softest undyed alpaca used in our MINTA cushions and throws.
We are currently developing new branding, imagery and marketing material to present at the show. To prepare for each meeting we will also research and approach clients to ensure we can make the best use of their time.
